Cleaning Print Heads

Cleaning ALL Print Heads : Press the PRINT MODE and ENV buttons at the same time until the printer beeps and the INK and ENV lights flash. Press the print mode button six times OR until all lights are flashing. To start the cleaning, press the ENV button until the printer beeps. When the cleaning is complete the indicator lights stop flashing.

Cleaning Individual Print Heads : First make sure the printer is turned on. On the printer's control panel press the PRINT MODE and ENV buttons at the same time until the printer beeps and the Ink and ENV lights flash. Press the print mode button until the light indicating the color of the ink cartridge that needs to be cleaned is flashing. To start the cleaning, press the ENV button until the printer beeps. When the cleaning is complete, the indicator lights stop flashing.

Reinstalling the Print Head

• Turn the printer off.
• Open the front cover, remove all four ink cartridges and set them upright on a level surface with their number labels facing up.
• Next, close the printer cover, turn the printer back on and perform the quick print head cleaning.
• When the cleaning is complete, turn the printer off and open the printer's cover. Open the print head compartment cover.
• Grasp the print head unit by the sides and lift it out.
• Inspect the nozzles for any dust or debris, then reseat/reinstall it.
• Close the compartment cover.
• You should hear 2 distinct clicks.
• Once the compartment cover is firmly closed, reinstall the ink cartridges and then close the printer cover.

Self Tests

Color Pattern: With the Printer switched off, press and hold the FF button, and press the POWER button until the printer beeps. When the POWER light starts to flash, release both buttons. When the POWER light stops flashing, the printer starts to print the color pattern. To stop printing the test, press the POWER button to turn off the printer.

Font Pattern: With the printer switched off, press and hold the PRINT MODE button, and press the POWER button until the printer beeps. When the POWER light starts to flash, release both buttons. When the POWER light stops flashing, the printer starts to print the Font Pattern. To stop printing the test, press the POWER button to turn off the printer.

Nozzle Check Pattern : With the printer switched off, press and hold the ONLINE button, and press the POWER button until the printer beeps. When the POWER light starts to flash, release both buttons. When the POWER light stops flashing, the printer starts to print the Nozzle Check Pattern. To stop printing the test, press the POWER button to turn off the printer.

• CF-102A4 - Transparencies. Used for producing overhead transparencies.
• GP-101A4 - Glossy Paper. Heavier coated paper, used for graphics.
• LC-101A4 - Coated A4 Paper. Coated paper used for high quality print.
• LC-301A4 - Bubble Jet Paper A4. Lightly coated, water resistant everyday usage paper.
• FS-101 - Fabric Sheet. Allows images to be printed onto 100% Cotton fabric (Machine Washable).
• BF-102A4 - Back Print Film A4. Used to produce back-lit displays.
• HG-101 - High Gloss Film A4. Gives documents a Gloss finish, used for reports/graphics.
• TR-101 - T-Shirt Transfer. Images can be printed onto the transfer material and then ironed onto T-shirts, Sweaters, etc..

Known Issues

Sharing With Other Parallel Port Devices

The Canon BJC-610 printer has a bi-directional communication feature. This feature does not share the parallel port, and can cause problems when you try and share the parallel port with other devices, for example scanners. You can correct this problem by downloading the Non-WPS Printer Drivers from Canon's Website.

Problems using Printer with Logitech Page scan

When the printer is connected to the computer through a Logitech Page scan, it does not function correctly. The solution is to remove reference to WAKEUP.DLL from the system.ini file.

Horizontal Registration is not aligned

When printing either self tests or text, the printout looks smudged or blurred. The solution is to correct bi-directional alignment, which can be done either via the print driver or the printer's control panel.

After installing new Cartridges, the Error light flashes and ink light is lit

The Ink detection may require calibration, as follows

• Turn off the printer
• Remove all the ink tanks. (Cartridges)
• Unplug the printer (maybe easiest to unplug from back of printer).
• Set paper thickness lever to the plain paper position (DOWN). (Lever beside black cartridge)
• Close the printer cover.
• Hold POWER and FF buttons while plugging the printer in.
• After tone(s) and print head mechanism stops moving, press ONLINE.
• You should hear more tone(s).
• Set paper thickness lever to the envelope position (UP).
• Close the Printer Cover.
• Press FF button. There should be more tone(s) and then it shuts itself off.
• Unplug the printer.
• Install all ink tanks.(Cartridges)
• Set paper thickness lever back to the plain paper position.

Windows 95 crashes after installing printer driver.

Computer lockups after rebooting from Windows Printing System driver installation. This typically happens after upgrading from Windows 3.1x to Windows 95. The solution is to edit the System.ini file and remove the MinTimeSlice line.

"Absolutely Bogus WPS printer driver"

My printer driver is set as "Absolutely Bogus WPS printer driver", and despite reinstalling the drivers it won't let me set it back to the Canon driver, as it tells me the driver doesn't exist. What can I do?

What you need to do is run Reg edit, and remove any entries in the Windows Registry for "Absolutely Bogus WPS printer driver" or "Absolutely Bogus WPS printer dr". When you've done that, close Reg edit and Reboot the computer. Once back into Windows, go back into the printer properties and you should be able to select the correct driver.

Ink Sensor / Paper Thickness Calibration fails

This can be caused by dirt on the sensor preventing proper operation. To clear this,

• Open the cover on the printer to expose the cartridges.
• Unplug printer
• Replug printer
• Power up printer
• When the print head moves away from the right, quickly unplug the printer.
• At this point you should be able to move the print head to the left,
• The INK SENSOR will be exposed well enough to clean, the sensor is located just behind the front silver rail.
• Clean the Sensor and area near it.
• Replug in the printer and Power up

Colors not Printing properly

Make sure that you have printer driver set to Color Matching.

Removing the Windows Printing System

Taken from Canon's website. Use the following procedure to remove the Windows Printing System for the Canon BJC-610 from your computer.

Windows 3.1x

• Double-click on the "Control Panel" icon.
• Double-click on the "Printers" icon.
• Select the Canon BJC-610.
• Push the "Remove" button.
• Confirm that you want to remove the Canon BJC-610 printer, push the "Yes" button.
• Close all open dialog boxes and exit from the Control Panel.
• Exit from Windows.
• Change to the Windows directory.
• Delete the following files:
• WPSCR.HLP
• WPSCR95.HLP
• WPSCR95.CNT
• WPSCRIN.EXE
• WPSCRIN.HLP

Windows 95 and Windows 98 :

• Go to the start menu. Go to the "Settings" item. Open the "Printers" folder.
• Delete the Canon BJC-610 printer. Close the "Printers" folder.
• Go to the Explorer, go to the Windows directory, go to the "start menu" folder, go to the "Programs" folder, delete the "Windows Printing System" folder.
• Go to Start. Select the "Shut Down..." menu item. Select "Restart Computer in MS-DOS Mode?" Press "Yes."
• Once the computer starts in MS-DOS mode go to your Windows directory, and type: "del wps*.*" Press enter.
• Now type: "Deltree wps" Press Enter. Say press "Y" Press enter.
• Now go to the system directory. Type: "del wps*.*" Press enter.
• Now go to the windows directory and type: "Edit win.ini"
• Search win.ini for WPS entries. Remove them, unless they are for works. Save the file.
• Edit the SYSTEM.INI file. Under the [386Enh] section, delete the following lines:
• device=WPSRCOM.386
• device=WPSCREM.386
• device=WPSRBND.386
• WPSLPT1=1
• NONJUMBOLPT1=1
• Type Exit. This should restart Windows.
• Go to the start menu. Select the "Run..." item. Type "Regedit -v".
• Go to the edit menu on Regedit. Select the "Find..." item.
• Type "wps" in the "Find What" edit box on the "Find" Dialog box.
• Press the "Find Next" button.
• As the WPS items are found, review them for their contents. Works adds a ".wps" entry, and there may be others. Generally speaking, you will want to delete any key called WPS, and any key that only contains entries for the BJC-610 printer.
• Close Regedit. It automatically saves your changes.
• Reboot Windows.

Notes - Encoder Error

If you receive an encoder error, try the following,

• Power off the printer
• Unplug the printer power cord
• Hold PRINT MODE and POWER buttons and plug in the printer's cord
• Release the buttons after the tones (beeps)
• Wait until the printer finishes, and power off
• Unplug the printer
• Plug it back in
