Voodoo cures. What works & doesn't work and why? Rubbing alcohol: Alcohol has a drying effect on inks and the minuscule benefits one may get from using it derived from the water content. Why not save the money and use distilled water. Windex: The ammonia in Windex damages the plastics of the print head. Plus Windex is not purified enough for print head cleaning. Brake fluid: Way, way, way too caustic and can any most likely cause more damage to your printer. Carburetor cleaner: Way, way, way too caustic and can any most likely cause more damage to your printer. Paint thinner: Way, way, way too caustic and can any most likely cause more damage to your printer. Lighter fluid: Too oily and requires a lot of flushing. Plus with Lighter fluid, Paint thinner, Carburetor cleaner and Brake fluid can dissolve the glue which holds the nozzle plate to the print head. They can also damage the tubing or other parts of your printer. Distilled water: Works on most inks. Can be heated to increase it's effectiveness and will not damage the plastics, tubing or other parts of the printer. Fedron: Way, way, way too caustic and WILL cause severe damage to your printer. Vodka: It's alcohol. See Rubbing alcohol. Plain water: It depends on the water. And dissolved solids can clog the print head more than it was. It's best to use distilled water. Cleaning cartridges: These are very iffy. That can help on very minor clogs but are useless for most clogs. Cleaning solutions: These can be home made concoctions or made be chemical or ink companies. Their effectiveness varies vastly among different brands. Some people are even misrepresenting their products and make claims that are completely untrue. |
